Nordec + ASMPT WORKS + Plejd: material flow driven by the production schedule

Keeping SMT production supplied starts before a reel runs out. Can this be done based on a dynamic work schedule?

In our project with Plejd, Nordec Smart Racks in combination with ASMPT WORKS help connect the material flow from picking reels in main stock, refilling line stock and replenishing the SMT machines.

What Plejd required

• ▸Line stock separated into left / right stock to minimise walking distance for operators
• ▸Machines should automatically order material from line stock before a reel runs out
• ▸Main stock should refill line stock based on the planned production schedule, making line stock fully dynamic and purely driven by planned work orders

How we realised it

To meet these requirements we combined ASMPT WORKS Verification, WORKS Logistics and WORKS Material Manager with the Nordec Smart Shelf software and Smart Racks.

The concept

• ▸WORKS Setup Center sends refill orders from the placement machines 20 minutes before a reel runs out — the Nordec Smart Rack line stock lights up the required reel(s) based on FIFO, and the operator picks and replenishes the machines
• ▸To maintain line stock refill, a minimum of three days of production plan is always kept approved in WORKS MFO, with work orders and their production order
• ▸Every 24 hours WORKS MFO/MDC creates refill orders from the approved production schedule to pick material from main stock and move it to line stock

First results

All picking in main stock and line stock is LED-guided. Guided picking and storing make the required material easy to locate, with reels ready close to where they are needed.

The first indication after one week of production shows a reduction of material picking and storing tasks of around 90%.
